Love at War: A Captivating WWII Romance Novel
top of page

Love at War begins halfway through World War Two when Anna Christensen has almost completed her business training.  The daughter of a handsome Norwegian seafarer and his beautiful wife, Anna’s looks attract much attention especially from two army officers.  Charismatic Captain Charles Milburn and his aide, 2nd Lieutenant Geoffrey Chandler are both attracted to the depot’s new shorthand-typist, but it is Charles, although engaged to be married, who Anna finds irresistible.

The seaside town of Barry avoids the ruthless bombing affecting South Wales’s cities and Charles revels in his comparatively ‘cushy’ number. Out of office hours, he’s playing tennis, pursuing lady friends and arranging a morale-boosting dance. After he is injured in a nightclub bombing, Anna and Geoffrey become closer, yet after Charles recovers, he makes a move on Anna.

    Praise for: Love at War

I adored this book and everyone in it. It's the best kind of story, where you don't want it to end. With WW2 at its heights, Anna's story might seem small, but her challenges and choices are not. The book is written by an author who knows how to build a story with warmth and heart. Love at War is the kind of story that makes you smile and tear up; all in all a lovely read. I fell in love with every character in Love at War and was not ready for it to end. Natalie Normann

''This lovely and emotional story is so full of the realism in wartime relationships.''  ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Liz Fielding

‘’A book from Jill Barry's heart.’’

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Catrin Collier

‘’ Writers search continually for THE story, and where better to find them in the trauma, drama, stresses and strains of war where love and tragedy vie in equal measure and love appears in the most unexpected places and ways. This story, rooted in fact will entrance readers of wartime fiction with its authenticity. Jill Barry has not only recreated a romance but an entire era.’’

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Catrin Collier

''Set during WW2, Anna juggles three would-be suitors. There’s Charles who’s charismatic, dashing and debonair, Geoffrey who’s nice and dependable and then there’s Davy – a childhood sweetheart.

There are plenty of twists and turns making it a good read right to the very last page BUT don’t read the spoiler on the back until you’ve read the book for yourself!''
